GLACIERS ON THE MOVE
Combining Science and Art to raise awareness on the surging glaciers of Svalbard
ABOUT
When Science meets Art
Glaciers On The Move is led by Glaciologist Dr. Heidi Sevestre and Engineer of Physics and Photographer David Wrangborg. Our project is funded by the Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund.
Through this project we aim to bring awareness and educate the locals and visitors of Svalbard on the beautiful yet dangerous surging glaciers of the archipelago. To collect all the material necessary for the exhibition we traveled to Svalbard twice in 2018..

WHAT ARE SURGING GLACIERS?
The dynamics of surging glaciers are one of the large big enigmas in Glaciology. In a time of global glacier recession, surging glaciers can suddenly "wake up" and accelerate at a pace over several meters per day for a few years, destroying everything on their way. Surging glaciers create large scale hazards for populations leaving around them, but are also some of nature's visually most dramatic phenomena.
